Whether you're a seasoned derby enthusiast or just looking for a good time, this event is perfect for everyone. A bit of Avery history
Started the year that slavery ended, the Avery Normal Institute was an advanced school designated for African Americans, since they could not attend white schools. The school thrived for nearly a century until it was abruptly shuttered in 1954.

The Avery Research Center (officially named the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture) was established in 1985 by the late Honorable Lucille Whipper as part of the academic program of the College of Charleston. The mission of the Avery Research Center is to collect, preserve, and promote the unique history and culture of the African diaspora, with an emphasis on Charleston, the South Carolina Lowcountry, and beyond. The Avery Research Center is a major driver of the cultural heartbeat that constantly enriches Charleston.
