In Loving Memory of Cynthia McCottry-Smith
It is with heavy hearts that we commemorate the life of Cynthia McCottry-Smith, a remarkable woman whose legacy of kindness, strength, and compassion will forever echo in the lives of all who knew her. Cynthia’s life was a tapestry of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and community.
Cynthia was more than a mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and colleague—she was a mentor, an advocate, and an inspiration. Her life was a testament to perseverance and hope, as she navigated challenges with grace and an unyielding belief in brighter days ahead. Whether through her involvement in community initiatives, her acts of kindness to neighbors, or the countless hours she spent uplifting others, her impact was profound and far-reaching. Not only did she graduate from the Avery Normal Institute, she became a teacher there. Additionally, she was a lifelong member of the Phyllis Wheatley Literary and Social Club, serving more than 65 consecutive years. She also an ardent and active member of the Charleston Chapter of the Links, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Avery Institute and Zion Olivet Church. Cynthia celebrated her 100th birthday at the Avery Research Center on December 17, 2022 with over a hundred guests in attendance.
Cynthia’s memory lives on in the stories we share, the values she instilled, and the love she gave so freely. Her laughter, her wisdom, her generosity, and her boundless empathy are treasures that remain with us. To honor her legacy, let us carry forward her example—to lead lives filled with compassion, resilience, and a deep commitment to supporting one another.
To her family and friends, we extend our deepest condolences. Her love was a gift that will continue to shine brightly, even in her absence.
Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we are grateful for the time we shared with Cynthia McCottry-Smith. She was truly one of a kind, and her legacy will remain a beacon of love and strength for generations to come.
Rest in peace, Cynthia. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
